Jaxon Pierce Burleson led the Kids Memorial Marathon this morning...all 2,499 kids were behind him, for about 30 seconds. That had to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Brett and I have laughed and laughed all day long talking about it. I did my normal speech on the platform, and then I came down to stand outside the fence while Brett, Sierra and Pierce waited for the countdown to start the race. As usual, they were standing at the very front of the pack. Last year, we had 1400 kids, this year, we had 2500+ register before we cut-off registration. That is A LOT of kids...not to mention the ones that didn't register and all the parents that were there walking with them. As Ron Walker counted down, I kept thinking to myself that JB was going to get run over by all those kids. Some of them were 12 years old! As they neared...5, 4, 3, 2, 1....I look up, and JB is out in front, leading everyone in a dead sprint. I was thinking to myself, what the HECK is Brett doing letting him run by himself! Well, apparently JB took off running because he wanted to win. As he ran, people started cheering, so JB threw his arms up in the air as if he'd just crossed the finish line. By the time Brett caught up with him, he had pulled over to the side, bent over, hands on his knees..breathing like he'd just run the full 26.2 miles and was exhausted. For the next mile, Brett carried him, exhausted on his shoulders. He had his moment of fame, and to him, he did win. He lead the start, everyone cheered, that's all he needed. Leave it to our little JB...he can always make you smile. Sierra, she did run the entire time. Once she finished the race she was my little helper. Always doing exactly what you ask, and more. I am so blessed to have them in my life.
Well, another promotion under our belt. I always seem to dread these for some reason. But once they're over, I'm always glad we did it. Especially when we do it as a family. What a great day for a race!
Once we returned home, the kids played on their new fort all day long. We even cooked out and the four of us ate dinner "upstairs" in JB's fort. Sierra has the first floor. She planted flowers and hung them downstairs. JB has the second floor...he has Spiderman all over and dad is painting him some signs to go outside. One says "BOYS ONLY", although Sierra is allowed when no other boys are there :)
It was a busy day...a race, playing in the fort, friends over, and we even all rode scooters to the pond to throw rocks. To top it off, Dad and JB went to get movies and JB was asleep before they got out of the neighborhood. Sierra crashed shortly after.
Now it's our turn. Brett is already laying in bed reading a book. I just had to share our fun day.
Have a great week!
